    How does it work?

    Dental Implants Explained

    What are they?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the bone of your jaw and replaces the missing tooth root. After the Implant is placed, the bone surrounding the implant will gradually fuse to it, holding the implant firmly in place. This process generally take around 8-12 weeks. During this healing period, you may have temporary replacement teeth fiitted; the best options for you will be explained at your consultation.

Once the Implant has fused or integrated to the bone, your replacement teeth in the form of a crown, fixed denture or bridge will be attached to the implants. These teeth are then securely held in place by your implants as your definitive teeth.

    Who can have dental implants?

    • The dentist will pre-assess you to see if this treatment will be viable for you. Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good health, but there are some lifestyle habits that may affect your suitability, such as if you smoke, have gum disease or have had radiotherapy around your jaw. You can’t have dental implants if you’re under 18 because the jawbone is still growing

    What will my dentist do?

    After your assessment

    • You will then be required to attend for some minor surgery, this is when your implant will be placed into the bone of your jaw.
    • After the implant has been placed, we will review you again in 2/3 weeks time to check how the site is healing.
    • We then allow the bone surrounding the implant to gradually fuse to it. This process generally take around 8-10 Weeks.
    • After the 8-10 week healing period we then begin the construction of the false tooth/teeth. Impressions are taken and sent off to a Dental Technician who will construct the tooth/teeth.
    • The tooth/teeth will be fitted to the implant and you will be advised on how to care for your new prosthesis.
    • Your dentist will X-ray the Implant on an annual basis to check the health of the implant.

    What are the benefits?

    • Functional benefits- dental implants can significantly improve your ability to eat food that was no longer possible when suffering from tooth loss. Unlike other solutions such as unsecured dentures, with implants there is no danger of your replacement teeth slipping. The ability to taste food is improved with dental implants as well as overcome some speech difficulties.
    • Aesthetic advantages- Implant supported crown can look and feel like natural teeth. Incredible aesthetic results can be achieved with the use of high quality restorations with the ability to restore patient’s full smiles; significantly improving patient’s quality of life, restoring confidence and ultimately self-esteem.
    • Comfort– patients often report how incredibly comfortable dental implants are; feeling like having their natural teeth back. Most patients find it difficult to differentiate between the implant and their natural tooth.
    • Health related benefits- replacement of teeth with dental implants helps to improve the overall health of your mouth with the risk of pain and infection reduced. In addition they can have a valuable nutritional benefit and being able to eat foods such as fruits and vegetables, which was no longer possible with inadequate forms of teeth replacement such as ill fitting dentures.
