    How does it work?

    Inlay/Onlay Explained

    What Are They?

Similar to a filling, Inlays and Onlays are used to restore a cavity within a tooth.

Inlays and Onlays are custom made by a Lab Technician, they are used when a standard filling is not sufficient and they are cemented to the tooth.

    What Will My Dentist Do?

    • The dentist will pre-asses your existing tooth and see if your tooth is viable for an Inlay/Onlay, occasionally an X-ray may be required to check that there is no sign of infection in the root of the tooth.
    • The dentist will drill the tooth to get good retention.
    • The dentist uses a soft, mouldable material to take impressions of your mouth and they are sent off to a Dental Technician who constructs the Inlay/Onlay. This takes 1 week; In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary.
    • At your final visit, the dentist will check that the Inlay fits correctly, make any minor adjustments and then fix it permanently in place. Your dentist will advise you on how to care for your new restoration.

    What are the Benefits?

    • They restore the tooth’s normal function.
    • They improve the appearance of a tooth.

    Inlay vs Onlay

The main difference between inlays and onlays is the amount of tooth surface that they cover. Inlays are designed to fit within the grooves of a tooth and cover a smaller surface area, while onlays cover one or more cusps and can extend to cover a larger portion of the tooth’s surface. Because onlays cover more of the tooth, they are generally more expensive than inlays, but they can also provide more extensive repair and can last longer.

Your dentist will recommend the best option for your individual needs based on the extent of damage to your tooth, your budget, and other factors. In some cases, a filling or crown may be a better option, while in others, an inlay or onlay may be the best choice for restoring your tooth to its natural function and appearance.
